Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae (parasitoid) (Rondani, 1875)
This wasp is widely distributed, occurring in many parts of Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. It has been deliberately introduced into some areas/countries as part of biological control programs like into Hawaii or several Central American countries (Bartlett et al., 1978).
It is a solitary pupal ectoparasite of various species of Diptera, including the families Muscidae, Drosophilidae, Tephritidae, or Anthomyiidae. The hosts include important pest flies like Musca domestica, Stomoxys calcitrans, fruit flies, or the invasive spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii. It is commercially available in some countries.
Apart from killing their host by oviposition, females also often feed on the hemolymph of fly pupae, which extends their lifespan and increases their egg production. The total development time last around 2-3 weeks.
