Aphytis melinus (parasitoid) DeBach, 1959 - (California red scale parasitoid)

This ectoparasitoids is native to India and Pakistan and was introduced in 1957 into California against the citrus red scale (Aonidiella aurantii). It has been also released in other citrus producing regions like southern Europe. These releases were successful and managed to keep the scale populations at a low level.

The adult female lives for about 2 weeks and a life cycle is completed in about 2-3 weeks. The parasitoid is also produced commercially for augmentative releases.
