Lepidosaphes Shimer, 1898 - (mussel scales)
This genus of scale insects contains around 100 species. Most are found in warmer parts of Asia and Africa, but a number of species also occur in the Americas and in temperate regions. Several are important pests of agricultural crops like the citrus mussel scale, Lepidosaphes beckii, or the apple mussel scale, Lepidosaphes ulmi.
The insects of this genus are characterized by an elongated body and a number of morphological features like the arrangement of the macroducts of the pygidium. The scale is well sclerotized on the pygidium and membraneous in the prepygidial region.
Type species: Lepidosaphes conchiformis
