Voria ruralis (parasitoid) (Fallen, 1810)
This species of tachinid fly has been reported from Europe and the Americas as parasitising larvae of the cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni) and other Lepidoptera. However, V. ruralis is currently regarded as a species complex and the taxonomy of this species is in need of revision using DNA analysis (Fleming et al., 2017). The type locality of V. ruralis is Sweden.
Female parasitoid flies lay eggs on a cabbage looper. After emergence, the parasitoid larva enters the host and develops while the host larva is still feeding. It kills its host when it is fully grown and emerges to form a puparium. Parasitisation rates of up to around 50% have been recorded on cabbage loopers in the field.
