Prof Steven R. Belmain has a Professorial Chair in Ecology funded by competitively won grants in the field of applied ecology specialising in the sustainable management of vertebrate and invertebrate pests, improving the management of natural resources and advancing the livelihoods of the poor. Research interests include: ecosystem services, ecological pest management, agroecology and ecological engineering, entomology, chemical ecology, animal behaviour, small mammal ecology, and eco-epidemiology of zoonoses.

SRB has published over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals, books and book chapters with a personal 5-year citation rate of over 1200 and an i10-index of 34. He is PI of several European Union funded projects on the ecology and management of rodents as well as funding from a range of donors (McKnight Foundation, DFID, UN agencies) collaborating with institutions in more than 20 countries across Europe, Africa and Asia.

SRB is an Associate Editor for the journal Wildlife Research, Board Member for Biopesticides International, Fellow of the Royal Entomology Society, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Coordinating member of the International Society of Zoological Sciences, Committee member of the World Health Organisation's Global Leptospirosis Environmental Action Network. Recent publications have been published in PLoS ONE, PLoS NTD, PeerJ, Biological Control, Phytochemistry and other SJR Q1 journals.
