Tyto alba (predator) (Scopoli, 1769) - (barn owl)
The barn owl is common and widely distributed in most temperate and tropical regions. It prays mainly on rodents and shrews.
In agricultural areas, it is regarded as a valuable natural enemy of pest mice, rats and voles. The owl can be used to control outbreaks of such pests by setting up nesting boxes (e.g. see Meaney et al., 2021). In Spain, the percentage of pest species in the diet of barn owls has been determined at around 80% (Montoya, 2021).
