[Thysanoptera species infesting citrus in the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey]

Abstract: Thysanoptera species on citrus orchards were surveyed in Adana, Mersin, Hatay and Osmaniye provinces in Eastern Mediterranean Region of Turkey in 2003 and 2004. Samples consisted of 300 citrus flowers were collected from each location at blossom period and preserved in glass vials contained 70% ethyl alcohol. A total of eight species belong to families, Thripidae (5 species), Phlaeothripidae (2 species) and Aeolothripidae (one species) were identified. These thrips species were Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), Thrips meridionalis (Priesner), Thrips major (Uzel), Thrips tabaci (Lindeman), Pezothrips kellyanus (Bagnall), Haplothrips reuteri (Kamy), H. distinguendus (Uzel) and Melanthrips sp. F. occidentalis was the most prevailed species constituting 36 % of the total sample and 35 % of the total adult thrips. T. meridionalis and T. major had share of 26 % and 25 % in the total samples, respectively, which they were represented by 26 % and 20 % of the total thrips specimens. Proportions of other thrips species found in total sample or total thrips population were lower and they varied from 1 % to 6 %. Kelly's citrus thrips, P. kellyanus was recorded for the first time in the region and constituted 5 % of the total thrips specimens.
The mean number of adult thrips species on citrus ranged from 0.001 to 0.10 per flower in the two years. None of the thrips species obtained from the flowers caused economic damage on fruits of various citrus species.
