Theocolax elegans (parasitoid) (Westwood, 1874)
This wasp is widely distributed and a solitary ectoparasitoid of the lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica), Sitophilus species and other storage pests. Laboratory and large-scale field studies have indicated that it very effective, achieving a high reduction of the populations of the above storage pests (e.g. Giunti et al., 2021).
The adult parasitoid lives for 2-3 weeks in the presence of host larvae. T. elegans prefers 3rd and 4th instar larvae as hosts. The female paralyses the host larva first before depositing an egg beside it. The development of the T. elegans larva takes about 2 weeks.
