Tapinoma melanocephalum Fabricius - (ghost ant)

The origin of the ant is unknown and is possibly located somewhere in Africa or in Asia. It is now wide-spread in various regions and has become a household pest. It is typically associated with homes and often builds its nest in houses, e.g. in crack in the wall or in other hollow spaces. Outdoor nests may be found under objects lying on the ground. It also tends and protects honeydew-producing insects.

The ant is 1½-2 mm long with a characteristic colouration. Head and thorax are brown to dark brown and antennae, abdomen and legs light brown to yellowish.
