Strongwellsea castrans (entomopathogen) A. Batko & Weiser 1965
This fungus has been recorded from Europe and North America as infecting different Diptera. For example, on Delia species it can cause infection peaks of >50%, resulting in significant mortality. Fungi of the genus Strongwellsea have an unusual biology among the Entomophthorales: Conidia are produced while the infected insects are still alive and move around. The infected adult flies develop a characteristic hole on the abdomen through which the conidia are discharged. This biology ensures an efficient dispersal of the conidia.
