Spilosoma virginica Fabricius, 1798 - (yellow woollybear)

This medium-size moth is found in North America and parts of South America. The caterpillars are polyphagous and the host plants include crops like vegetables (e.g. beans, cabbage, carrots or eggplant) and ornamentals, but also weeds.

The moth has a wingspan of 35-45 mm and is whitish with some small black spots and darker marks on the abdomen. The caterpillars are uniformly coloured, often yellowish, but the colour can vary from beige to dark red, to brown and black.
