Spilosoma obliqua Walker, 1855 - (Bihar hairy caterpillar)

This medium-size moth is found in southern parts of Asia and is common in India. The caterpillars are polyphagous and a pest of various crops. They can cause serious damage, e.g. yield losses in jute can reach 30%.

The moth has a wingspan of 20-25 mm and is yellow-brown with small black spots. The caterpillars are black with white patches, covered with tufts of hair which are black (front part) or brownish (rest of body).
