Sphaerophoria (predators) Le Peletier & Serville, 1828
This genus of hoverflies is widely distributed and contains around 80 species. The larvae feed on aphids while the adults are regarded as useful pollinators. Some species have been studied as natural enemies of pest aphids. For example, the larvae of Sphaerophoria scripta and S. rueppellii are commonly found on vegetables and other crops in Europe and will feed on a variety of aphid species.
The adult flies have a typical body length of 6-10 mm, brown to black with yellow markings. They have a long, rather narrow body, in comparison to other genera of Syrphidae.
