Tenuivirus oryzabrevis

Assigned virus:
rice grassy stunt virus (RGSV)

The rice grassy stunt virus is found in south-eastern Asia and causes significant yield losses on rice in some areas like Vietnam. It is transmitted by the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens. Management involves pesticide application against the vector. Resistant cultivars are under development.

The particles are thread-like, 6-8 nm wide and mostly circular with a length of up to 2,400 nm. The genome consists of 6 single stranded RNA segments which encode 12 proteins. Each segment has 2 open reading frames and an ambisense arrangement.
