Rhabdoscelus obscurus (Boisduval, 1835) - (New Guinea sugarcane weevil)
This weevil is a pest of sugarcane in northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, parts of Indonesia and several Pacific Islands, including Bonin Island which is part of the Japanese Ryukyu Islands. Apart from sugarcane it can attack a number of palm species like the betelnut palm.
On sugarcane, females chew a hole into the stalk and deposit an egg into the hole. The larva tunnels inside the stalk, passes through 6 larval stages and then constructs a cocoon of fibre for pupation. Typically, there are several generation per year.
