This family of nematodes contains species which are pathogenic to insects and also to other plant pests like slugs and snails. Like species of the better known family of the Steinernematidae, they can be associated with pathogenic bacteria which help them to overcome the defence of their hosts. In the field of biological control a well known species of Rhabditidae is Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita which infects a variety of snails and slugs and is commercially available.
