Revista Brasileira de Entomologia 43 (3-4), 229-234
Abstract: A two-year trapping survey (August, 1994 to September, 1996) and a three-year host survey (November, 1994 to February, 1997) were conducted in an apple. growing region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, to determine which species ofAnastrepha Schiner, 1868 (Diptera, Tephritidae) occur in the area. Sixteen species were recorded among ca. 9,000 females captured: A. aczeli Blanchard, A. amita Zucchi, A. barbiellinii Lima, A. daciformis Bezzi, A. dissimilis Stone, A. distincta Greene, A. elegans Blanchard, A. fraterculus (Wied.), A. grandis (Macquart), A. morvasi Uramoto and Zucchi, A. phaeoptera Lima, A. pseudoparallela (Loew), A. similis Greene, A. sinvali Zucchi and two undetermined species (one close to A. luederwaldti and other probably new species), A. fraterculus was obtained from 12 host species belonging to four plant families. A. dissimilis was found infesting fruits of Passifora sp. Hosts fruits of the other 14 species remain unknown in the region. A. pseudoparallela, A. aczeli, A. amita, A. morvasi, Anastrepha nr. luedewaldti, A. distincta, A. similis, and A. sinvali are recorded for the first time in Rio Grande do Sul. Morphological peculiarities in comparison with flies from other localities are provided whenever available. Adults of the tephritid genera Tomoplagia Coquillett, Hexachaeta Loew, and Rhagoletis Loew were also trapped. The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wied.), was not detected during the surveyed period.
