Conophthorus resinosae Hopkins, 1915 - (red pine cone beetle)
This cone beetle is found in eastern Canada and in neighbouring parts of the U.S. It attacks mainly red pine (Pinus resinosa), but also Jack pine (Pinus banksiana). Conophthorus banksianae has been described as a twig beetle infesting Jack pine. However it has been concluded that both hosts are attacked by the same species and both names are synonyms, with each host causing a different feeding behaviour. The twigs of attacked Jack pines wilt and infested cones of red pines wither and fall to the ground. The adult beetles overwinter and emerge the following spring. There is one generation per year.
