Orientation disruption of Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefèbvre) (Lepidoptera Noctuidae) using (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate
REDIA 84, 81-89
Abstract: Field studies carried out in southern Italy (Battipaglia, Salerno Province) during four years (1997-2000) showed that male catches of traps baited with virgin females or a synthetic sex attractant blend for Sesarnia nonagrioides (Lefèbvre) (Lepidoptera Noctuidae) are significantly reduced by (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:Ac), a sex pheromone component of Sesamia cretica (Lederer). In order to evaluate the potential use of Z9-14:Ac in controlling the pest, two types of dispensers (Eppendorf polyethylene vial and multilayer laminate cellulose) baited with 10 and 50 mg of compound, respectively, were utilized. Dispensers were distributed at different distances (3 x 3 in; 2 x 2 m) in small plots (144 m2, 12 x 12 m); a trap baited with virgin females (n = 2) or synthetic sex attractant blend was placed at the centre of each plot. Multilayer laminate cellulose dispensers baited with 50 mg of Z9-14:Ac and placed at a distance of 2 x 2 m significantly reduced the attractant power of traps activated with virgin females in highly infested maize fields. Results show that Z9-14:Ac is probably involved in the reproductive isolation between S. nonagrioides and S. cretica.
