Chaetanaphothrips orchidii (Moulton) (Thysanoptera Thripidae), specie nuova per l'Italia
[Chaetanaphothrips orchidii (Moulton) (Thysanoptera Thripidae): a thrips new to Italy]
REDIA 84, 119-128
Abstract: C. orchidii is recorded for the first time from Italy. It was found attacking plants of Piper sp. in a glasshouse in Florence in a collection of tropical plants. Details on the morphology of the female are given as well as on its taxonomy in order to separate it from the other congeneric species such as C. signipennis (Bagnall), C. leeuweni (Karny), C. theiperdus (Karny). The thrips reproduces parthenogenetically. Though it is known as a polyphagous species, it was found infesting only pepper plants in that glasshouse close to many other plants, which are known as its hosts in the tropics. Remarks are made on its taxonomy, geographical distribution, host-plants and damage: some information is given for its monitoring and control.
