Psilidae - (rust flies)

This family of flies contains around 300 species. The larvae bore into roots, tubers and stems. A few species form galls. The family includes the carrot fly, Chamaepsila rosae, a pest of carrots and some other crops in temperate regions. The adults are typically 5-6 mm long, coloured brown, black, reddish or yellow and have few hairs or bristles.
