Abstract: According to Polish law Cochliobolus carbonum R.R.Nelson (anamorph: Helminthosporium carbonum Ullstrup) is the quarantine organism which introduction into Poland is prohibited. The fungus does not occur in Poland. The only natural host is maize. Seed infection is often deep-seated and therefore impossible to detect by visual inspection only. Imported maize seed for sowing are tested for presence of fungus. In 1997 Helminthosporium carbonum was detected in maize seeds originated in the USA. The used testing method is in accordance with EPPO Quarantine Procedure No 35.
