Biology, distribution and seasonal occurrence of Coroebus elatus (F.): An emerging pest of strawberries in northwestern Turkey

Abstract: The biology, distribution and seasonal occurrence of the strawberry buprestid, Coroebus elatus (F.), were investigated under laboratory and field conditions in Bursa, Turkey, in 1998-2000, to obtain the basic biological information needed to manage this pest. Under controlled laboratory conditions (25.0±2.0°C, 65±5% relative humidity and 16L:8D photoperiod), the mean preoviposition, oviposition, and postoviposition periods were 3.1±0.5, 20.2±10.0 and 4.6±4.4 clays, respectively. Males lived for 21.5±11.0 days. Female longevity was 27.9±10.1 days and fecundity was 36.9±21.5 eggs per female. Weekly sweep net counts showed that adults began emerging between late May and early June, coinciding with the beginning of strawberry harvest. In 1999, beetles were present from late May to early August. In 2000, adult activity continued until the end of August. When the wild larvae were reared in pots kept under laboratory conditions, the adults emerged between early February and mid-March, suggesting the absence of diapause in strawberry buprestid larvae. Our results showed C. elatus to be widely distributed throughout the strawberry fields in Bursa. Mean infestation rates at study sites varied from 10% to 100%. Since this pest could potentially destroy the entire crop, control of adults is vital to prevent economic damage in heavily infested strawberry fields.
