Platypus cylindrus (Fabricius) - (oak pin-hole borer)

This beetle is found in Europe, surrounding countries, and North America. It attacks the trunks of oak and other hardwood trees. In most cases, only dead or severely stressed trees are attacked, with the main damage occurring in timber yards. However, in Portugal apparently healthy cork oak trees have been increasingly attacked since the 1980s. The beetles introduce ambrosia fungi, mainly Raffaelea species into the galleries as a food. The adult beetle is blackish in colour and 5-7 mm long.
