First identification of a phytoplasma infecting Cornus sanguinea and Sambucus nigra
Plant Pathology 57 (6), 1175-1175
Abstract: Between 2005 and 2007, a survey was conducted in Italy to identify alternate hosts of phytoplasmas which normally infect grapevines (16SrV-C, 16SrV-D and 16SrXII-A). Cornus sanguinea (36 plants) and Sambucus nigra (32 plants) were growing near vineyards and were observed with symptoms of yellowing, reddening, leaf roll and witches' broom. The presence of phytoplasmas was demonstrated with PCR analysis using the universal 16S ribosomal RNA gene primer. The PCR product was cloned and sequenced for 2 samples. Sequence analysis showed the 100% and 99% identity with 16SrXII-E phytoplasmas.
