First report of Blueberry scorch virus in Europe
Plant Pathology 54 (4), 565-565
Abstract: In a blueberry crop field of northern Italy plants showed symptoms of blueberry scorch disease in 2004. A filamentous virus with longitudinal ribbing typical of the carlaviruses was found in some samples. In specific ELISA tests against a number of viruses found in blueberry crops, 13 of the collected samples tested positive for Blueberry scorch virus (BlScV). The virus was then partially purified and analysed by RT-PCR. An amplification product of ca. 380 bp was cloned and sequenced. A pairwise amino acid sequence comparison, using the amino-terminal region of the coat protein of BlScV isolates so far sequenced, showed that the Italian isolate has the highest identity (70%) to the NJ1 strain of BlScV.
