Phytoseiulus Evans, 1952
This is an important genus of predatory mites. Several species are used as biological control agents, mainly against spider mites, and are commercially produced. The species occur in tropical and subtropical regions and are used in greenhouses in temperate regions. E.g. the most commonly used species, Phytoseiulus persimilis, is found naturally in the Mediterranean region.
The adult females are around ½ mm long. Taxonomically, the genus is characterized by the number, position, length and shape of its setae.
