Further characterization of Colletotrichum orbiculare for vegetative compatibility and virulence
Phytopathology 86 (11 suppl.), S62-S62
Abstract: A re-examination of races of C. orbiculare (Phytopathology 83:1190-1198) indicated that two races (race 1 and 2) could be distinguished on differential cucumber [Marketer (MK) and H19] and watermelon [Black Diamond (BD) and Charleston Gray (CG)] cultivars; furthermore, cucumber and cantaloupe isolates were in two VCGs (VCG 1 or 3) and watermelon isolates were in a single VCG (VCG 2). Cucumber isolates had a race 1 virulence phenotype and watermelon isolates had a race 2 virulence phenotype. Additional isolates were examined for vegetative compatibility and virulence. Several watermelon and cucuzzi gourd isolates in VCG 2 had a unique virulence phenotype and were therefore designated race 2B. A single melon isolate from Taiwan belonged to a new and previously undescribed VCG (VCG 11) and also had a race 2B phenotype. Several new cantaloupe isolates from the U.S. belong to VCG 2 and had a race 2 phenotype.
