Vertical and cross-furrow movement of Phytophthora capsici in field soil
Phytopathology 86 (11 suppl.), S62-S63
Abstract: A field study was set up to study the vertical and cross-furrow movement of Phytophthora capsici in soil. The field was artificially infested with P. capsici inoculum at the beginning of the season. P. capsici movement was evaluated under three different irrigation methods (furrow- alternate row, subsurface drip - daily and three day) and different colored mulches (black, silver, white on black). Pepper leaf disk assay and PVPP selective media was used to detect Phytophthora capsici in soil P. capsici was not detected in any of the control treatments. At the end of the season the pathogen was detected in all other treatments irrespective of irrigation type and mulch treatments up to a depth of 37.5 curs and moved to the adjacent uninoculated beds up to 60 cms from the point of inoculation. Lateral movement of the pathogen down the rows was not studied. From the preliminary results it appears that the inoculum levels of the pathogen decreases with the soil depth.
