Abstract: During the last decade increasing damage has been reported to deciduous orchards in Israel caused by three groups of borers: the bark beetles Scolytus amygdali Geur. and S. mediterraneus Eggers (Scolytidae); the root borers Capnodis tenebrionis L. and C. carbonaria Klug (Buprestidae); and the trunk borer Cerambyx dux Fald. (Cerambycidae). Until recently these borers were considered secondary pests in this country, with routine spray and dusting treatments preventing bud destruction by the scolytids and the infestation of trunk and branches by the borers. Changes in orchard management and lack of efficacy of routinely applied insecticides lowered the pressure on the borer populations and growers now face serious difficulties in coping with them. Initial infestation of stone fruits by Capnodis spp. or of plum, apple and pear by C. dux is sufficient to render the tree susceptible to repeated attacks and infestation by bark beetles. All three groups are primarily pests of stone fruits (genus Prunus). However, large areas planted with apple and pear were damaged by bark beetles that multiply in adjacent stone fruit plantations. The most widespread damage in the central mountain range and the southern coastal region is caused by S. amygdali, in the Hula Valley and northern Samaria by C. tenebrionis, and in the southern coastal region and western Negev by C. carbonaria. Injury by C. dux is increasing in stone fruit plantations in Upper Galilee and the Judean Mountains.
