Abstract: Tile mango thrips, Scirtothrips magniferae Priesner (Thripidae: Terebrantia) is a pest of mango in the Arava Valley hitherto not recorded in Israel. The presence of and damage by this pest have been noted since the early 1970s. Severe injury is caused to the young shoots. especially on young trees, from June through October. Preliminary observations on populations of the thrips uncontrolled by insecticides, indicated the presence of four peaks during the summer, which may correspond to four generations. For several years the thrips was controlled by four to six spray applications of conventional insecticides during the summer, resulting in severe infestations of scale insects in the treated orchards. Therefore, experiments were initiated in 1980 to replace conventional insecticides with tartar emetic, an old insceticide which is regarded as less harmful to natural. enernies. Tartar emetic controlled the thrips more efficiently than endosulfan and fenitrothion, but was slightly less effective than pyrethroids.
