Phyllocnistis populiella Chambers, 1875 - (aspen leafminer)

The moth mines the leaves of aspen and poplar in North America. It has caused severe and widespread damage in Alaska on quaking aspen (Populus tremoloides). The larvae form a characteristic pattern, resembling a woven thread. The adults emerge from the pupae in June and July. They are active for several weeks and then overwinter in protected sites. In spring, they feed for example on extrafloral nectaries of aspen, mate and oviposit.
