Phorodon cannabis Passerini, 1860 - (hemp aphid)
This aphid is native to Europe and surrounding regions, but has spread to North America (first record in 2016, see Cranshaw et al., 2019). It attacks hemp plants (Cannabis sativa) colonizing mainly the underside of the leaves. Heavy infestations can result in plant wilting and yellowing and significant crop damage.
The life cycle of P. cannabis includes sexual and asexual generations (holocyclic). The overwintering eggs hatch in spring and there are several wingless, asexual generations during the summer, when populations build up. The winged, sexual forms develop in autumn with the adults dispersing and females laying eggs.
