Phenacoccus madeirensis Green, 1923 - (Madeira mealybug)
This is a polyphagous mealybug, believed to be native to tropical and subtropical parts of the Americas. However, it has spread to many countries in Africa, Asia and the Mediterranean regions, and was first described in 1923 from the Portuguese island of Madeira. Under suitable conditions and insufficient control by natural enemies, populations can increase rapidly, completing one generation per month. It is mainly a pest of ornamentals and vegetables.
