Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée, 1854) - (tomato fruit borer)
The moth is found in South and Central America and is a pest of tomato. The female lays eggs on small, green tomato fruits. The hatching larvae bore into the fruits, causing yield losses of up to 50%. Other crops may also be attacked. The development from egg to adult lasts around 6-8 weeks.
Management involves the removal of alternate solanaceous hosts and plant debris after harvest as well as crop rotation. Resistant tomato varieties are under development.
