Bruchus pisorum (Linnaeus, 1758) - (pea beetle)
This beetle is a serious pest of peas and is widely distributed in temperate and subtropical regions. During spring, the adults feed on pollen and nectar of pea flowers. Later, females deposit their eggs on the young shoots and the emerging larvae bore into the developing pea seeds. Infested peas have a low commercial value and are unfit for human consumption. They will also no longer germinate.
The larvae start pupation after about 4-6 weeks. The adults are around 5 mm long and dark brown, mottled with darker and lighter spots. There is only one generation per year, with the adults overwintering in protected sites.
