Orseolia oryzivora Gagne, 1982 - (African rice gall midge)

The gall midge is a serious pest on rice in western Africa. The larvae infest the tillers at the vegetative growth stage, inducing tubular "silver shoot" galls. Each gall prevents the production of a panicle and the pest can cause considerable yield losses, more than 50% during heavy infestations. This adult insect is about 3 (males) to 4 mm (females) long and is nocturnal. The species has 3 larval stage and the life cycle lasts 3-4 weeks. Control currently relies on insecticide applications. Early and synchronized plantings is also recommended, but not always effective.
