Opisina arenosella Walker - (black-headed caterpillar)

This moth is a pest of coconut palms in India and Sri Lanka, from where various outbreaks have been reported. It is also found in some neighbouring countries and has apparently spread to parts to south-eastern Asia like southern China. Other crops may be also attacked. Eggs are laid on the underside of the leaflets, where the caterpillars feed, usually gregariously. The attacked palms can have a scorched appearance and yield losses can reach 50%. The insect passes through 4-5 generations per year.
