Odontoglossum ringspot virus (ORSV)

This virus is an important and common pathogen of orchids, causing substantial economic losses. The symptoms include leaf streaks, striped mosaic, mottling, ringspots, leaf deformations and stunting. Flowers show ringspots and/or colour breakage and plants may die. ORSV can be transmitted mechanically by sap, e.g. during the cultivation process of orchids. It is transported through the horticultural trade.

ORSV has a positive-sensed single-stranded RNA genome (+ssRNA) with 6611 nucleotides. The genome contains three open reading frames (ORFs), ORF 1 encodes a 126 kDa helicase and a 183 kDa read-through product, ORF 2 and 3 are replicated as subgenomic RNAs and are translated into 31 a kDa movement protein and a 18 kDa capsid protein. Viral particles are frequently distributed in a lattice arrangement in host cells.
