[Investigations on effects of plant strengthening products to tri-trophic system field bean (Vicia faba (L.)) - black bean aphid (Aphis fabae Scop.) - lacewing larva (Chrysoperla carnea Steph.)]

Abstract: In a greenhouse study the effects of plant strengthening products "Garlic Gard" and "Pflanzen Plus" in comparison to natural plant-protecting agent "Schädlingsfrei NEEM" to tri-trophic system field bean (Vicia faba (L.)) - black bean aphid (Aphis fabae Scop.) - lacewing larva (Chrysoperla carnea Steph.) was investigated. The experiment included four series of tests: I - effects on field beans, II -effects on black bean aphids on field beans, III - effects on lacewing larvae and black bean aphids on field beans, IV - direct effects on lacewing larvae (treatment in petri dish) following transfer on field bean with black bean aphids. Water was the control agent. Every test was repeated 10 times to ensure reproducibility of results.
In the development stage, the length, the biomass of the whole plant, the sugar-, nitrogen concentration of the leafs were the test parameter for the field bean. The test compounds did not have a negative influence on the field bean parameters or stimulate them.
The abundance of the black bean aphid was significant decreased by all three agents and by the predators. Additionally, the Neem agent reduced the development and the survival rate of the lacewing larvae.
The tri-trophic system field bean, black bean aphid and lacewing larva are useful biotest to screen the effects of plant strengthening products. Through this work, much data was collected. Despite the large amount of results, the cause of these observed effects is unknown.
