Monelliopsis pecanis Bissell, 1983 - (yellow pecan aphid)

This aphid is found in North America and has been also introduced into the Mediterranean region and into South Africa. It is one of several aphid pests of pecan trees. When populations increase, the aphids produce large amounts of honeydew on which sooty moulds grow, blocking the sunlight. The damage can result in reduced growth, defoliation and yield losses (e.g. see Wood et al., 1987). Under suitable conditions M. pecanis can produce one new generation per week, or up to 30 in one year.
