Abstract: In the past, historical insect outbreaks in forest stands could not be detected unless exact documentations and records, e.g. by the forest service existed. The recently developed Needle Trace Method, NTM (KURKELA and JALKANEN, 1990), allows to assess past needle retention of conifers retrospectively, over a trees lifetime. This destructive method requires the felled sample trees to be cut into pieces by removing the branch whorls of the stem to reach the annual shoots (bolts) as the objects of investigations (JALKANEN and AALTO, 1998). In the laboratory the innermost rings of the bolts have to be planed successively to reveal the needle traces, which are part of the vascular bundle system. Applying NTM renders various parameters concerning needle production and needle loss. A study in Finland demonstrated that the conceived long-term needle age and needle loss patterns of a documented Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stand could be used to verify recorded outbreaks of pine sawfly (Neodiprion sertifer GEOFFR.) in 1981-1982 (JALKANEN and AALTO, 2000).
