[Effectivity of synthetic insecticides against Maruca vitrata F. and the parasitoid Bassus asper Chou and Sharkey in the Philippines]

Abstract: The bean podborer, Maruca vitrata F. (Lep.: Pyralidae), is a serious pest of leguminous crops in the tropics and subtropics of Asia, Africa and Latin America. First insecticide resistances by M. vitrata were reported in Africa but not in Asia. Knowledge of insecticide resistances is important for the development of control strategies. Our attention was concentrated on the biological stages of this pyralid which are harmful in the field. Therefore, we tested in laboratory pod-dip bioassays the effect of the common synthetic insecticides chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin, methomyl, and carbaryl to M. vitrata larvae. Insecticides were tested in different concentrations, including the recommended one. Effects of the same insecticides were also tested with the parasitoid Bassus asper Chou and Sharkey (Hym.: Braconidae). Mortality was observed after 48 hours and the LC50-values calculated using probit analysis. M. vitrata showed resistances to all four insecticides. Highest resistance was recorded for deltamethrin, followed by chlorpyrifos, methomyl and carbaryl. Fourth instar larvae were less sensitive to insecticides than 3rd and 2nd instars. None of the insecticides gave 100 % control at the recommended concentration. B. asper was very sensitive to insecticides tested and 100 % of the adults were killed at the concentration recommended for the host M. vitrata.
