[Attractiveness of selected plant species for Coccinella septempuncta L. (Col., Coccinellidae) in the field]
Mitteilungen der deutschen Gesellschaft für allgemeine und angewandte Entomologie 13, 189-192
Abstract: In the present study, it was investigated whether the adults of Coccinella septempunctata L. (Col., Coccinellidae) react in a distinctive manner to different plant species, grown in a quadratic experimental system. The plant species were selected after laboratory investigations with a four-armed olfactometer to find out plants with high or low attractiveness to beneficial arthropods. On an exemplary basis, the results of five of the grown plant species as well as for the spontaneous grown vegetation are presented in detail. The population density of C. septempunctata was monitored on 15 plots (each 0.25 sqm) for each plant species and in the plots with the spontaneous vegetation, on 16 dates between June and September 1999. Each of the plant species had noticeable differences with regard to attractiveness for C. septempunctata. For example, lucerne and mugwort seemed to attract coccinellids to a greater extent than linseed or dead-nettle. On most of the plant species, the populations of coccinellids reached their peaks in August, but on linseed there was not any coccinellid during this time. On the spontaneous vegetation, the population was very low and decreased during the summer. The results are discussed with regard to their use in the biological control of pests and the enhancement of beneficial arthropods.
