[Comparative studies on the biology and predation of two subtropical predatory mites Cheyletus fortis Oudemans and Euseius addoensis (van der Merwe and Ryke) with the commercially available predatory mite Amblyseius cucumeris Oudemans]

Abstract: Development, reproduction and predation of three predatory mite species were compared using a special lucite cage with an Impatiens-leave pinched in under controlled laboratory conditions. Cheyletus fortis Oudemans (Acari: Cheiletidae), Euseius addoensis (van der Merwe and Ryke) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) and Amblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were fed on Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) and Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) to examine if they are promising agents for the biological control in greenhouses. Results showed that all three predatory mite species could feed on both prey species but only A. cucumeris was limited able to achieve its full development under this favourable conditions. E. addoensis could only develop when fed on T. urticae but C. fortis was not able to reach the adult stage neither with F. occidentalis nor with T. urticae. The reproduction of all three species was so low that they will not be able neither to establish nor control thrips populations in greenhouses. Furthermore the predation rate was not homogeneous at all.
