Untersuchungen zur Frassaktivität und Wirksamkeit des räuberischen Thrips, Scolothrips longicornis Priesner (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)
[Studies on the feeding activity and effectiveness of the predatory thrips Scolothrips longicornis Priesner]
Mitteilungen der deutschen Gesellschaft für allgemeine und angewandte Entomologie 5 (1-4), 247-249
Abstract: The feeding activity of Scolothrips longicornis Priesner larvae and adult females on Tetranychus cinnabarinus Boisd. and fecundity were studied at 3 different temperatures. During larval development females consumed between 58 and 64 T. cinnabarinus, eggs at all temperatures whereas the male larvae only, killed between 32 and 36 mite eggs. The total prey consumption during development was not affected by temperature, since 1st- and 2nd-stage larvae killed the same number of mite eggs at all temperatures. Adult females of S. longicornis showed a high daily prey consumption and fecundity, which both increased with increasing temperatures. At 15°C a maximum number of 55 mite eggs per day were killed and a mean of 6 eggs laid per day by the females. At 25°C the daily prey consumption and fecundity increased to a maximum of 90 mite eggs killed and 9 to 10 eggs laid per female and day on the average. At 35°C a high of even 130 mite eggs killed and 16 eggs laid per female and day was reached. A close correlation between the feeding acitivity and fecundity was observed at all temperatures. S. longicornis females showed a rather constant prey consumption of T. cinnabarinus nymphs varying between 38 and 50 nymphs killed per day over the whole lifetime, which was strongly abbreviated. However, the mean daily fecundity by showing a slow decline after increasing at first strongly differed from the feeding activity.
