Matsumurasca onukii (Matsuda, 1952) - (tea green leafhopper)
This leafhopper has been reported as a pest of tea in China and Japan. It is also found in Vietnam and Taiwan. The hoppers feed primarily on the buds and young shoots, causing chlorosis, deformations, and in severe cases necrosis of the leaves. Economic losses of 15-50% have been reported, in addition to the feeding damage reducing the tea quality. Pesticides are usually applied for managing this species.
Morphologically, M. onukii can be confused with the similar Empoasca vitis which has been also called "tea green leafhopper".
