Lespesia aletiae (parasitoid) (Riley, 1879)
This species of tachinid fly is widely distributed in many parts of North and Central America. It parasitises various Lepidoptera larvae, including pests like Spodoptera species. Female L. aletiae lay eggs next to host caterpillars. The eggs hatch within 2 min after oviposition and the first instar maggots bore into the host (Cardoza et al., 1997). The host caterpillar dies within 1-2 weeks after parasitation and the mature tachinid larvae emerge from the host about 2 days later. They then form puparia.
