Kerria lacca (Kerr, 1782) - (true lac scale)

This species of lac insect has been and to some extent still is farmed in Asia as a source of shellac, used as a finish for wood and leather products. It is polyphagous, feeding on the branches of various woody plants. A single tree can produce more than 5 kg of lac twice a year. It can be also a pest, for example when it invades tree crops like Ziziphus or lychee.
