First report of `Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris' affecting sesame cultivation in India
Journal of Plant Pathology 89 (2), 301-301
Abstract: A phyllody disease was noticed on sesame plants growing in various districts of India in 2005. The total nucleic acids were extracted from infected and healthy leaf samples and hybridized with a probe prepared from a clone of Chilli little leaf phytoplasma 16S ribosomal RNA gene. All symptomatic plants showed strong hybridization but none was seen in symptomless samples. Further analysis showed the highest (99%) identity with members of `Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris' (16Srl) group.
